Jr. Stewardship Program

We believe in nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards through our Jr. Stewardship program. This unique program is designed to educate preschoolers/the advanced nature students and their families about important ecological concepts while engaging in hands-on activities that benefit the local ecosystem.

One of the key focuses of the Jr. Stewardship program is raising awareness about invasive species like the Himalayan blackberry and English Ivy. Families are invited three times a year to join us in pulling invasives. By teaching children and their families why it's crucial to work together to remove these invasives, we instill a sense of responsibility towards preserving the natural habitat.

In addition to learning about invasive species, children also actively care for and maintain mason bee homes. They participate in building swallow homes, planting trees and shrubs such as Hemlock, Cedar, Douglas fir, Salal berry, Salmonberry, and Thimbleberry. These activities are integrated into all our programs and not only teach valuable lessons about plant care and biodiversity but also foster a sense of connection to nature.

Children are encouraged to explore insect homes and understand the importance of leaving leaves on the ground undisturbed to maintain a healthy forest floor. By instilling these practices early on, we aim to cultivate a sense of respect for the environment and encourage sustainable habits that will benefit both present and future generations.

Actively engaging children in environmental stewardship activities and giving them real-life tasks to care for the environment is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, involving children in hands-on experiences related to environmental conservation fosters a sense of responsibility and connection to the natural world from a young age. By participating in activities like building bird homes and learning about local wildlife, children develop a deep appreciation for nature and understand the importance of protecting it.

Furthermore, providing children with meaningful environmental tasks helps them develop important life skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and empathy. When children are entrusted with tasks that contribute to the well-being of the environment, they learn the value of hard work and accountability. This hands-on approach also enables children to see the tangible results of their efforts, instilling a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work.

Moreover, involving passionate individuals who are knowledgeable about wildlife and conservation not only exposes children to a wealth of information but also connects them to a broader community of environmental activists. Interacting with experts who share their expertise and enthusiasm for nature motivates children to take an active interest in environmental issues and encourages them to become stewards of the environment themselves.

By engaging children in meaningful environmental work and providing them with opportunities to interact with dedicated individuals, we can inspire the next generation of environmental advocates who are equipped to make a positive impact on their local communities and beyond.

Through the Jr. Stewardship program at Jericho Park, children are provided with a unique opportunity to develop a deep appreciation for nature, learn essential ecological principles, and actively contribute to the well-being of their local ecosystem. Join us in nurturing the environmental leaders of tomorrow!
